Wind Guidelines - Whakaraupō / Lyttelton Harbour

These are guidelines for experienced steerers to assist in deciding whether to venture out in Te Waka Pounamu craft.

Consider the experience of everyone in your crew in the current conditions, alongside the wind gusts and average wind speed.

Any wind approaching 10 -15 knots (18 – 25 km/h) should be approached with caution.

Please check the suggested routes for various wind directions and strengths - start by heading into the wind first, and returning home downwind (with the wind behind you).

Use lpc.co.nz for current wind conditions including gusts. Click on the ‘one minute wind’ in the drop down menu under Historical Weather Information and identify the gust history and pattern.
